A group of prisoners engineer an arduous escape from a Stalinist Silberian Gulag (the world' most brutal prison system) in 1942 during World War II. These courageous multi-national prisoners discover the true meaning of friendship as their epic journey takes them across thousands of miles of hostile terrain en-route to India and their freedom. A film directed by Peter Weir and written by Slawomir Rawicz (novel) and Peter Weir and Keith Clarke (screenplay). It stars Jim Sturgees as Janusz a young Polish inmate, Colin Farrell as Valka a tough Russian inmate, Ed Harris as Mr. Smith an American inmate, and Saoirse Ronan as Irena, an orphaned teenage girl on the run who meets up with the fugitives.
